Local heritage list project

Local heritage list

A local heritage list is a list of assets (buildings, monuments, sites, places, areas or landscapes) which have a heritage significance but which are not recognised by another designation. Assets on local lists are not protected in the same way as listed buildings but can be afforded protection through the planning system as ‘non-designated heritage assets’.

Tandridge has an existing list of locally listed heritage assets, which are known as Buildings of Character. The current list was last updated in November 2013 and is accompanied by selection criteria. Many of the assets on our current list pre-date the adopted criteria and have not been reviewed against them.

Local heritage list project

In 2021 Surrey County Council’s Historic Environment Planning Team secured funding to produce new or updated local heritage assets lists (‘local lists’) for 6 districts and boroughs in Surrey, including Tandridge.

This has involved asking people to nominate buildings, features, places and designed landscapes they felt made a significant contribution to their local environment through their heritage interest. Those that were nominated, as well as existing assets, were then assessed by the team at Surrey County Council against new selection criteria to decide whether they qualify for inclusion. Further information on the project is available on Surrey County Council’s website

Surrey has come to the end of the project and has provided Tandridge with a draft list, outlining their recommendations. It is now for Tandridge to consider both those recommendations and next steps. We will provide further updates on this webpage once a decision has been made on our approach.
