Sheltered housing

Sheltered housing gives tenants an opportunity to live in a safe and friendly environment where they can keep their independence and look after themselves, but at the same time, have help and advice when needed. The support service provided by the Council's Sheltered Scheme Co-ordinators helps our sheltered scheme residents have peace of mind and reassurance.

Residents of sheltered developments still need the support and care of relatives and friends. Each Sheltered Scheme Co-ordinator has responsibilities to a number of people and cannot replace this vital support.

Not all sheltered housing schemes have the same facilities. Some have communal facilities on site, such as a lounge, laundry with drying room and a guest room. Others may have existing social clubs. You will be able to enjoy the benefits that these communal facilities can bring, while keeping your privacy whenever you want to.

For more information, please see our Guide to Sheltered Housing.

Where can I find more information?

An action plan that will change and modernise housing and support services for older and vulnerable people in the district has been agreed by the Housing Committee - read the future of sheltered housing to find out more.

To apply for Sheltered Housing provided by the Council or our housing association partners, you will need to join our Housing Register.
