Sheltered housing survey results

We sent out a survey on sheltered housing in July 2009 to all of our sheltered tenants, everyone aged over 40 on the housing register and 20% of community alarm clients. Of the 1,500 surveys we sent out , 649 were returned (43%). 63% of returns came from our existing sheltered tenants.

We asked 29 questions.

  • 21 questions for our existing sheltered tenants seeking views on both their homes and the services provided by our Sheltered Scheme Co-ordinators (SSC).
  • 8 questions for non sheltered tenants. From these we were trying to find out what type of housing that they may wish to move into the future and what would be the most important features of this housing.

Of those that responded:

  • 96% of sheltered tenants believe sheltered housing met or exceeded their expectations.
  • 90% of sheltered tenants feel living in sheltered housing helps them to lead an independent life.
  • 91% of sheltered tenants are generally satisfied with their home.
  • However, the most common aspects of their home tenants were not happy with were parking, isolated location and access to public transport, cleaning of communal areas and grounds maintenance.
  • 70% of tenants are in contact with their SSC more than once a week.
  • 85% are happy with the amount of contact with the SSC.
  • 42% of those currently not in sheltered housing would consider a Tandridge District Council or housing association sheltered scheme in the future.
  • The most important factors non sheltered tenants would take into consideration if they were to move include having their own self- contained home, security and proximity to facilities (eg transport, shops, GP), friends and relatives.
  • The least important factors included communal areas & activities, wheelchair accessibility and warden provision.

This survey forms part of the Council's Sheltered Housing Review.
