The Sunday Trading Act 1994 required shops with a retail area of more than 280m2 (3000 ft2) to give 14 days notice in writing to the Local Authority of their intention to open on Sundays and give details of the opening hours. However, the Regulatory Reform (Sunday Trading) Order 2004 removed the necessity for large shops to register with the Local Authority and the need for a public register.
Occupiers of large shops are required to display their Sunday trading hours on notices both inside and outside the shop.
Large shops are able to trade on a Sunday for a continuous six hour period between 10.00am and 6.00pm. Customers in the shop before the expiry of the appropriate six hour period are allowed a further 30 minutes in which to complete their purchases.
Large shops are not permitted to open on Easter Sunday, or Christmas Day when it falls on a Sunday.
If you wish to advise us that intend to open a large shop on a Sunday please either contact us and we will send you an application form or complete and submit the online Notification of Sunday trading form
