Leader of the council

Martin FisherShaping the future of the district

It’s been a busy few months as we consider the shifting landscape in local government and look at how we can create a road map for the future to ensure Tandridge supports an environment where people want to live, work and visit.

Key to this is our need to deliver a robust Local Plan. On page 6 you can find out how you can get involved in the latest stage, the Sites Consultation.

Each site put forward for consideration for development has now been through a landscape, ecology and other assessments, to look at whether it can be developed or not and this is what we need your feedback on now.

Just to be clear, the Council has not yet decided how many homes we think could be built, all we have is a forecast for how many people might be living here in 20 years' time. That needs assessment is something all councils are required to have by the government.

That forecast need is not the same as the number of houses which will be built.  The number of homes we can actually build is likely to be significantly constrained by factors such as Green Belt policy, areas of outstanding natural beauty and areas of high flood risk.

The creation of our own Local Plan will give us greater control over where development, the government has told us to deliver, will go. It will also help us build new infrastructure such as roads, schools and health care facilities our district so desperately needs, as well as creating affordable housing so local people can afford to live here.

Since becoming the new council leader a few months ago, I have worked hard to make sure we listen to local residents and deliver what they want. This Local Plan will be no exception.

So please get involved and tell us what you think. Let’s shape the future of our district together.

I look forward to serving you and if you would like to get in touch, please e-mail me at or leave a message on 01883 732747 (24 hour answerphone).
