Gordon Keymer, CBE, Leader of the Council
One of our greatest achievements this year has been the acceptance of our Core Strategy by an independent Inspector appointed by the government.
The strategy, which sets out our planning polices for the area, was examined by the Inspector against a backdrop of high media coverage, strong developer opposition and resident involvement.
Council planners worked hard to put forward the Council's case at the public examination, strongly supported by local residents and campaigners who turned out in their hundreds.
The developers mounted a persistent campaign to argue the strategy was flawed and that it did not identify enough sites for the building of new houses.
Having listened to the evidence put forward by the Council, local residents and developers at the hearings, the Inspector has decided the Council's strategy will achieve its aims.
One of the best outcomes is the support for the Council's policy which will prevent back garden developments where there is already enough housing available.
A big thank you to everyone who turned out to support us. I am sure the Inspector was left in no doubt about the strength of local feeling. This is a great example of the Council and local residents working together to try and protect our local environment.
