From 3 February 2009 every household will receive a weekly recycling service, including the collection of plastic drinks bottles.
Currently half the district has a weekly service and half fortnightly. After successfully trialling the scheme in several areas, it will be extended to the remaining 18,000 homes in Tandridge so every household can take part and have recycling collected every week.
If you are not sure whether you can recycle plastic drinks bottles in your area, you can look it up by clicking on refuse & recycling collection dates.
If your road is in the weekly recycling scheme, you can recycle your plastic drinks
bottles in a blue recycling bag.
We only take plastic drinks and milk bottles, as these are made from the two most commonly accepted types of plastic and means we can ensure it is recycled in the UK.
We know you are keen to recycle more of your plastic packaging, but at the moment demand is very low for mixed plastics as a recycled material in this country.
All plastic bottles we collect are taken to our depot, bailed together and transported to Leicester to J & A Young's to be recycled into new plastic bottles.
What type of plastic bottles can I recycle?
Sorry we can not accept ready-meal or food trays, yogurt pots, polystyrene, plastic film or packaging, carrier bags, or non-drinks bottles such as shampoo, washing liquid or bleach bottles.
Why can I only put plastic drinks and milk bottles out in the weekly collection and not other types of plastic containers?
The plastic recycling industry in the UK only want the type of plastic that drinks bottles are made from. By only collecting plastic drinks bottles we can make sure they will be accepted for recycling and not shipped abroad.
If you are in a fortnightly collection area, you won't be able to recycle your plastic drinks bottles until February 2009. We will send you a card to let you know the start date of your new weekly service.
I am currently in a fortnightly recycling area, but I want to recycle plastic bottles. Where can I take them?
There are plastic bottle recycling banks at the two Community Recycling Centres at Bond Road in Warlingham and Chaldon Road in Caterham. These are managed by Surrey Waste Management on behalf of Surrey County Council. Please visit www.surreywaste.info or call 01306 748300 for more information.
Why is my road not included when I live near roads that are?
We had a maximum of 4,000 properties to include in the latest phase of the service and these have been chosen for operational reasons. Unfortunately this means some roads are not included in the new weekly scheme despite being adjacent to those that are, this is only because we reached the maximum number of properties that could be included.
