First stage of demolition starts at former Rose and Young garage site

The new owners of the former Rose and Young garage site in Caterham, Clarion Housing (CH), have started the first stage of the demolition work on the site, marking an important step forward in the regeneration of Caterham.

CH, which has planning permission to build 48 affordable homes and a supermarket on the site, recently took ownership and has begun preparing the site which has been an eyesore in the town for over 20 years. The Council has been actively involved in achieving the development of this site, recognising the significance of the site’s location in contributing to the vibrancy of the town.

The affordable homes are expected to be ready by winter 2020 and will be available to purchase through shared ownership (part rent, part buy) aimed at first time buyers. Purchasers will buy part of the home and pay rent on the rest.

The redevelopment helps achieves two of the Council’s key priorities - the delivery of more affordable housing for residents and the overall regeneration of Caterham.

Councillor Martin Fisher, Leader of the Council, said: “We are delighted this development is finally underway and that it is a viable site for affordable housing. Transforming this key site from a derelict building into housing and retail units will greatly benefit the surrounding area and the town centre as a whole. This is a significant step forward in Caterham’s regeneration journey. It will also help provide housing for people in the district who need a home they can afford.”

Liz Hills, head of new projects for Clarion Housing, said: “We are delighted to kick-start this important scheme in Caterham where we are transforming a long term derelict site into a desirable development where people want to live. The homes themselves will be ideal for first-time buyers who are struggling to get onto the housing ladder, but want a home of their own.”
