Award for the Council’s Covid-19 support for local businesses

The Council’s work to help and support local businesses throughout the Covid-19 pandemic has been celebrated with the South East Region award at the All-England Federation of Small Businesses Local Government Awards

The award recognises the Council’s work during the start of the pandemic to help businesses across the district, which included:

  • Helping businesses access financial support by distributing millions of pounds in grants to eligible businesses and sharing the latest guidance on accessing other financial support and reopening businesses safely.
  • Encouraging residents to shop locally and support our wide range of wonderful local businesses, through our Backing Business campaign.
  • Working with the Hot House Business Support Programme to deliver a webinar to help businesses improve their skills and training and build websites to help them trade online during lockdown periods.
  • Supporting businesses to recruit the best candidates, helping increase employment opportunities for young residents and provide training and work experience opportunities, with the creation of the Youth Hub, in partnership with Reigate & Banstead Borough Council.

The Leader of the Council, Councillor Catherine Sayer, said “Thank you to the Federation of Small Businesses for this award. I’m really proud of how we’ve supported our businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic. The hard work and dedication of our officers, working with councillors and our many local partners, meant many businesses across the district could access vital financial grants and business support during a very difficult time.”
