Improving standards in private sector housing

Our commitment to dealing with substandard privately rented homes is set out in our new Private Sector Housing Enforcement Policy.

The policy, which was approved and adopted by our Housing Committee on 25 January and will come into force on 1 April 2022, sets out:

  • Our powers for ensuring all privately rented accommodation is well managed, properly maintained, safe and habitable.
  • The steps we take to investigate tenant complaints about private housing.
  • The extent to which we will use powers under the Housing Acts and other legislation to improve standards and ensure properties are correctly licensed.

All privately owned, privately rented and registered provider accommodation is covered by the new policy, which you can read on our website.

The majority of landlords and letting agents who let out homes in the district are responsible property managers, but we have a vital role to play in tackling those who are irresponsible and don’t comply with their legal obligations. We will use our powers and duties to regulate private sector housing. You can read more on our website.
