New parking meters in Caterham will help shoppers support local businesses

Visitors to Caterham Valley will be able to park more easily outside shops and businesses thanks to new parking meters, which allow one hour of free parking.

The meters, which become operational on Tuesday 8 December will stop bays being blocked by motorists parking for long periods, ensuring some of the town centre’s prime spaces are available for shoppers.

The meters are on a small section of Godstone Road, close to the town centre roundabout, with the majority serving bays on Croydon Road between the roundabout and just beyond the Caterham Cobbler. Shoppers who park their vehicle will need to enter their registration number and get a ticket from the parking meter to display on their dashboard. The displayed ticket allows the vehicle to park for free for one hour, but when the vehicle leaves, it cannot return to park on the road for three hours.

Caterham Valley for You, also known as the Caterham Business Improvement District (BID), bought the meters and the Council’s parking enforcement officers will help ensure motorists do not stay for more than an hour.

The freeing up of spaces for around 40 vehicles is a great asset for Caterham. Visitors can already use free spaces available in the town’s car parks and now our on-street parking is more accessible than ever.

The festive season will be different for many of us this year and we hope by parking closer to the shops, everyone can support the wonderful variety of Caterham Valley businesses. These businesses need everyone’s support to survive, thrive and continue to contribute to the unique spirit of Caterham.

The Caterham BID has created an online gift guide, which highlights the variety of gifts that can be bought from local businesses which either offer local delivery or a click and collect option.
