Recycling and waste truck fires caused by hot coals

Please don’t put disposable barbecues or hot coals in your recycling or rubbish bins because they can cause a fire inside the vehicle. This also creates a risk to the safety of our collection crew.

Biffa, our waste collection contractor, has told us that disposable barbecues and hot coals can take up to 48 hours to fully cool. Please leave these items in a safe place to cool or soak them in water before you put them in the black wheeled rubbish bin.

Aerosols, lithium batteries, marine flares and gas cannisters can also cause truck fires if not disposed of correctly. Please do the following to dispose of dangerous items:

  • Aerosols: make sure the cans are completely empty before putting them in your blue lidded recycling bin.
  • Lithium batteries: keep them until the community recycling centres reopen, or put them in battery disposal bins at supermarkets.
  • Gas cannisters and tanks: make sure the cannister is completely empty and contact the shop or business you bought it from to arrange its return, or store it safely at home until the Warlingham or Caterham community recycling centres reopen.
  • Marine flares: contact the business you bought them from to arrange to return them.
  • Disposable BBQs / hot coals: leave these items in a safe place for 48 hours to cool, or soak them in water before putting them in your black wheeled rubbish bin.
