Council agrees future committees and plans for the future
Last night’s Council meeting, the first held online, agreed the format and make-up of the Council for future meetings and looked ahead to the steps needed for the Council and the district to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic the Annual Council meeting scheduled for 21 May was cancelled. In addition, no district elections were held on 7 May. Normally, an Annual Council meeting is held within three weeks of local elections and agrees a number of appointments to committees.
A minute’s silence was held for Councillor Ken Harwood, Chairman of the Overview & Scrutiny Committee and Steve Nicholson, a member of staff, who both recently passed away.
Council agreed there would be no change to the Chairmen and Vice Chairmen of Council, Committees and Sub-Committees, the allocation of seats and membership of Committees and Sub-Committees, or the timetable of meetings. The only exception is for Overview & Scrutiny Committee which needs to elect a new Chairman at its next meeting due to the sad passing of Councillor Harwood.
Appointments to outside bodies remain unchanged, except for Councillor Bob Milton and Councillor Lesley Steeds replacing the late Councillor Ken Harwood on the Surrey Police and Crime Panel and Felbridge Sports Association respectively.
In addition, discussions were held about how councillors and officers would work together to ensure the recovery of the Council and the district from the pandemic.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Tony Elias, said: “This is an extremely challenging time for everyone and it is important we work together to make sure the district and in particular, our economy recovers from this crisis. Agreeing to keep our current committees unchanged gives us some stability and by working together, with the support of our staff, we can focus on our ambitious programme this year to ensure our communities recover and thrive and to deliver the services our residents expect and deserve.”
