What will happen to your recycling?

All the recycling materials you put in your bin will be taken to a material recovery facility (MRF).

What happens at the MRF?

  • The MRF comprises a series of conveyor belts, screens and technology to sort all the different materials.
  • The mixed recycling is loaded on to the main feed and the first process is to remove the cardboard.
  • It then goes through the "glass breaker" which as its name suggests sorts all the glass.
  • The recycling material continues through to the paper screens where all paper is removed.
  • Magnets then help to separate aluminium cans from tin or steel cans.
  • Lasers and other techniques are then used to identify and sort plastics in to the many different types of polymer.
  • Once the paper, glass, plastics and metals have been split into separate streams, they are sent onto the reprocessors to be used to make more glass bottles, cans, newspapers etc.

You can view a video of what happens to recycling at http://www.biffa.co.uk/about-biffa/media-centre/videos.html.
