Garden waste collection

Help the environment by signing up to our new garden waste collection service. Your garden waste will be composted and not sent to landfill. Garden waste sent to landfill produces methane, a greenhouse gas, which contributes to climate change. Composted garden waste breaks down naturally creating rich compost which can be reused.

How does the service work?

When you subscribe to the service you will get a brown wheeled bin with a capacity of 240 litres. The bin(s) remain the property of Tandridge District Council. We will then collect your bin(s) every two weeks (except over Christmas) from the kerb outside your property. The collection may be on a different day from your other waste collections.

Garden waste we collect will be composted at Pease Pottage in West Sussex by a company called KPS Composting LtdThis link will open in a new window (This link will open in a new window), diverting waste from landfill and reducing the production of methane. The compost produced from this service will not be available to buy as it is used to supply local agricultural land, golf courses, stately homes, gardeners, and sports pitches in the Crawley area.

What can be put in the bin?Brown wheeled bin with Tandridge District Council logo for the garden waste collection service

You can put the following materials in your bin.

  • Grass cuttings
  • Hedge trimmings
  • Twigs and small branches no thicker than the width of your wrist
  • Plant prunings and weeds
  • Old or used compost

You can not put the following materials in your bin.

  • Any kitchen waste, including fruit and vegetable peelings and egg shells. These can be composted in a home compost bin
  • Pet bedding
  • Soil

How much will the service cost?

You can get up to six bins, each costing £42.50 per year, and it is payable by direct debit only. This is just 80p per week and covers the cost of 25 fortnightly collections, including the use of the bin.

Why is there a charge for this service?

The service is paid for by everyone who subscribes. This is fairer for other residents who do not have a garden, who choose to compost at home, or who do not want to use the service. This means they will not pay for the service through their council tax.

Who can apply?

We have a limited number of bins available on a first come first served basis. The service is available across the district and homes able to take part were sent a leaflet inviting them to sign up. There may be a small number of properties where restricted access means we cannot offer the service.

How do I apply?

To check if you can join the scheme please leave a message with your name, address and contact number on 01883 732953 or e-mail these details to gardenwaste@tandridge.gov.uk.

Can I still use Biffa's garden waste sacks?

We are trying to reduce the use of Biffa's garden waste sacks as the material collected is sent to landfill. You will not be able to use Biffa's garden waste sacks if your property is eligible to take part in the wheeled bin service unless you are physically unable to wheel the bin to the kerb of your property. In this case you may find the sack service easier to use as they are collected from the same location as your dustbin. To register for this please leave a message on 01883 732953 or email gardenwaste@tandridge.gov.uk. You will then be able to request garden waste sacks straight from Biffa by calling 01883 712333 (press option 2). These cost £25.39 for 25 bags.

If we can offer the garden waste service to your property but you do not wish to use it you could compost your garden waste instead using a home compost bin, or take the waste to the community recycling centresThis link will open in a new window (This link will open in a new window).
