Woldingham village and the Harestone Valley area of Caterham have unique and very special characters that are a result of the way they were originally developed but also because local planning policies have, over the years, ensured that the special character has been protected. The Council has adopted Design Guidance as Supplementary Planning Documents (SPD) to ensure that new development does not harm the character of those areas.
Developers and home owners are encouraged to use them to ensure what they propose is in character with the two areas and the Council will use them to assess planning applications.

It should be noted that the Woldingham Village Design Statement which was adopted as an SPD in 2005 is still a material consideration in determining planning applications as is Policy BE7 'Woldingham' of the 2001 Tandridge District Local Plan.
