Oxted is the main town serving the southern part of the Tandridge District and is south of the North Downs, near the Kent border.
The older settlement of Old Oxted, now by-passed by the A25, developed during the medieval period around its main industries of agriculture and tanning. It is a Conservation Area with a number of pubs and restaurants, the main focus having moved during the late 19th century to "New Oxted".
Oxted Station opened in 1884 and the new town grew around it, as the area became a popular place for commuters to live. The town centre, split by the railway into Station Road East and Station Road West, has many shops, restaurants and services.
It is characterised by a large number of specialist individual shops, although there are also some main chain stores.
The District Council's Offices are in Station Road East and the library and health centre complex is next door in Gresham Road. Oxted County School is located in Bluehouse Lane.
Tandridge Leisure Centre is a popular facility which offers swimming and leisure facilities. The Barn Theatre in Bluehouse Lane and the cinema in Station Road West are both well used local entertainment venues and Master Park is an attractive open space on the western side of the town.
Hurst Green is south of Oxted and developed around the station at Hurst Green Halt, which opened in 1887. It is mainly a residential area with its historic origins still visible around the large central village green. There is a small industrial estate in the Holland part of Hurst Green.
