Grants and loans for home repairs and adaptations

The Council provides the following help for older and vulnerable people requiring improvements or disabled adaptations to their homes.

Disabled facilities grants

Disabled Facilities Grants of up to £30,000  are available to fund adaptations to the homes of both owner-occupiers and public sector tenants , following assessment by an Occupational Therapist. These grants are means tested and can sometimes be supplemented by additional funding from Social Services. Works typically include installing stair-lifts, bathroom adaptations, ramps and grab rails in the home.

To qualify, clients must be assessed as being in a high need category and have had all works approved by an Occupational Therapist. The government currently contributes 60% of the cost of eligible works.

You will need to provide details of your financial situation by completing a Preliminary Test of Resources form. This will enable us to assess your eligibility for a grant.

Our Care and Repair Agency helps to guide people through the application process as well as project managing grant funded works.

Home Repair Assistance

Home Repair Assistance is available for eligible persons over 60 (and to persons under 60 verified as having long-term disability) who receive a means tested benefit or who are on low incomes.

Help is available for essential repairs, energy efficiency measures, fire detection and security installations. The upper limit is £5,000. This money is paid in the form of a long term interest - free loan repayable when the property is sold.

HouseProud equity release scheme

The HouseProud equity release scheme offers access to risk-free loans designed to meet the needs of older or disabled home owners who need repairs or alterations to their homes. The Council is able to contribute to the cost of works in appropriate circumstances and will supervise the projects if required.
