What is the Electoral Register?

There are two versions of the register which are produced. Copies are available for public inspection at the Council offices.

  • The full register shows the name and address of everyone who is entitled to vote in elections. Credit reference agencies can use it to check your name and address if you are applying for credit and it can also be used for law enforcement. It is a criminal offence to supply or use copies for purposes other than those set down in law.  For a list of those entitled to the full Register please see Electoral CommissionThis link will open in a new window (This link will open in a new window).
  • The edited register is available for general sale and can be bought by any person, company or organisation and can be used for any purpose, such as marketing. If you want to opt out of having your details appearing on the edited version you must let us know by ticking the 'Edited Register' box when completing either the canvass or registration form. If you have already opted out and you wish to change your decision please make sure when you complete the annual canvass that you delete the pre-printed tick.

Why should I register?

  • The information is required by law.
  • If you are not registered, you cannot vote in elections.
  • You may find it difficult to get credit, loans, a mortgage or bank account as the register is used by credit reference agencies.

If you have moved since October, changed your name or find that you are not registered to vote, you can get your details added or amended by completing a Voter Registration form.
