Future of sheltered housing

Tandridge District Council aims to ensure our services meet residents' needs. An action plan that will change and modernise housing and support services for older and vulnerable people in the district has been agreed by the Housing Committee.

The action plan was drawn up, following a review of the Sheltered Housing Service and has been driven by the need to create a service that better meets the changing needs of older residents. The review process included extensive consultation with both existing and potential users of older people's housing.

Now the action plan has been agreed, a pilot scheme will be launched to cover services across Caterham and will involve the following changes and new initiatives:

  • Sheltered scheme tenants in Caterham will be given more choice about the type of service and support they receive.
  • In future, some sheltered schemes will have less support from Sheltered Scheme Co-ordinators, which will be reflected in the cost of the service for these tenants.
  • A new support service is planned for older people living in Caterham, regardless of whether the person's home is council owned, privately rented or owner occupied. A support worker will work with older residents to provide a service to suit their needs.
  • Empty properties at Newlands Court in Coulsdon Road, will be rented to general needs tenants, who do not need the services of a Sheltered Scheme Co-ordinator. The top floor is already rented to general needs tenants, although it has a separate entrance.
  • Existing residents at Newlands Court will be consulted and given options about whether to remain at the scheme and receive visits from a Sheltered Scheme Co-ordinator not based on site, or move to another sheltered scheme.

If the Caterham pilot is a success, similar changes will be extended across the district over the next four years, starting in April 2012.

A full report and a brief executive summary have been produced detailing both the proposed changes and how the review was carried out.
