Working out your council tax benefit

If you are on a low income or receiving a benefit from the Department of Works and Pensions i.e. Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support, Employment Support Allowance, you should apply for Council Tax benefit. The amount you get will depend on you and your partner's income. You must live in the property to get this benefit.

Generally if you have savings of more than £16,000, you cannot get Council Tax Benefit but may be able to claim Second Adult Rebate.

       The basic conditions for council tax benefit presently are:

  • The claimant is liable to pay council tax,  the dwelling is your sole and main residence
  • The claimant (or someone on their behalf) makes a valid claim and provides all the relevant information and evidence to support that claim
  • The claimant is not a member of an excluded group i.e. owners and landlords of unoccupied dwellings
  • The claimants capital does not exceed £16,000, but this does not apply  if the claimant is in receipt of guarantee credit, nor does it apply to second adult rebate
  • Any deductions for non- dependants do not exceed the claimant’s eligible council tax

All valid claims are calculated and written confirmation sent to the claimant advising the outcome of their claim.
